The XM177E1, known to its manufacturer as the Colt Model 609, was a compact carbine developed for the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. It represented an early and significant attempt to create a shorter, more portable version of the standard M16 rifle for use in jungle warfare and by troops who needed a less cumbersome weapon, such as special forces and vehicle crews. This specific model was defined by its 10-inch barrel, a reduction in length that made it highly maneuverable in close quarters. To manage the intense blast and flash produced by such a short barrel, it was fitted with a distinctive, elongated flash suppressor often called a "moderator." It also featured a two-position telescoping stock and a receiver based on the M16A1, which included a forward assist.
