How many magazines do you need for a game day?

last updated: 18 july 2026

short answer: four to six mid-caps for a normal game day. that gets you through the vast majority of situations.

long answer below, because it depends on what kind of mags you run and what kind of games you play.

First: mid-cap or hi-cap

this is the more important question.

hi-caps hold 300 to 500 BBs in a drum with a spring you wind up with a wheel. they're cheap and you don't need many of them.

mid-caps hold 100 to 150 BBs, stacked in a spring column, like a real magazine.

low-caps sit around 30 to 70 BBs. mostly for people who want realism.

Why i recommend mid-caps
  • they don't rattle. a hi-cap sounds like a jar of peanuts when you run. people hear you coming. this really isn't a small detail.
  • they change how you play. with 300 rounds in your replica you start spamming. with 120 you shoot with more intent. it makes you a better player, even if it feels limiting at first.
  • you don't have to wind. a hi-cap has to be rewound halfway through a game or the feeding stops, usually at exactly the wrong moment.
  • some fields and events ban hi-caps. especially milsim and semi-realistic events. then you're standing there with the wrong gear.

hi-caps are handy as a backup in your bag, or if you play a support role with an LMG. and for a first rental they're perfectly fine.

how many BBs do you actually shoot

realistic numbers per game day, from experience and from what other players report:

play styleBBs per game day
calm woodland player, mid-caps600 to 1,200
normal player, mixed1,000 to 2,000
CQB, lots of short contacts1,500 to 2,500
spammer with hi-caps2,500 to 4,000
support / LMG role3,000 to 6,000
DMR or bolt-action100 to 400

a game day is usually six to ten games. you top up between games in the safe zone, so you don't have to carry your whole day's supply on your body.

so how many mags on your rig

what you want on your body for one game:

  • mid-caps: four to six. that's 400 to 900 BBs. enough for almost any game of twenty to forty minutes.
  • hi-caps: two. more makes little sense, that's already 600 to 1,000 rounds.
  • DMR or sniper: two to three mid-caps. you shoot little, but you don't want to run dry in a long game.
  • pistol: one spare. if you even have one.

always buy one or two extra to keep at home. magazines break, springs weaken, and there's always one that suddenly refuses to feed.

for long games and milsim

if you play a two-hour game or a milsim weekend, the picture changes. then you carry everything you need, and respawn can be far away or not exist at all.

in that case you want six to eight mid-caps on your body, plus loose BBs in a bottle in your backpack or dump pouch to refill on the move. a speedloader is genuinely handy here.

practical stuff

dump pouch. a floppy bag on your belt where you drop empty mags. otherwise you lose them in the woods or shove them down your trousers. it's cheap and it's one of the best small purchases you can make.

fill your mags at home in the morning. seriously. then you're not still loading up during the first briefing.

test every magazine before you go and play. put them on your replica and fire a few BBs out. a mag that won't feed is one you'd rather discover at home.

bio BBs and old mags. some older magazines are a bit tight for bio BBs, which run slightly larger in size. rarely a problem but it happens.

brand. buy mags from the same brand as your replica, or from a brand known to fit. M4 mags are fairly universal but not completely.

as for me

i play with five mid-caps on my rig and a hi-cap in my bag just in case. that works fine on a normal saturday. in the four years i've played this way i think i've run genuinely dry maybe twice, and both times it was my own fault for not topping up during the break.
