Which airsoft BBs should you buy? Weight, quality and bio BBs
of everything people spend money on in airsoft, BBs are the most underrated. someone buys a 400 euro replica and then runs a four euro bag of BBs through it. and then they complain the thing isn't accurate.
this is what actually makes airsoft BBs better, what weight does, and why cheap BBs chew up your hop-up rubber.
why cheap BBs really do damage
a cheap BB isn't round, isn't consistent in diameter, and has a seam from the injection mould. sometimes there are air bubbles inside, and sometimes there's literally sand or grit in the material.
what that does:
in your hop-up rubber. a BB with a burr or a hard particle scrapes past the rubber. a tiny bit every shot. after a few thousand rounds your bucking has a smooth patch or a groove, and then your hop-up gets unpredictable. an 8 euro bucking sacrificed to a 4 euro bag of BBs.
in your barrel. scratches in a precision barrel are permanent.
jamming. a BB that's just a touch too fat, or a BB that shatters, blocks your nozzle. if a BB breaks inside your gearbox your piston or cylinder head can take damage.
consistency. if your BBs vary by 0.02 g between each other and the diameter wanders, every BB flies a fraction differently. doesn't matter how well your hop-up is dialled in.
what to look for: 6.00 to 6.03 mm, seamless (no visible seam), polished, and from a brand you know. names that do well on fields i've played: Bioval, Blaster Devil, Geoffs, Nuprol, BLS, G&G. there are more, this isn't an exhaustive list.
the price gap between rubbish and good stuff is maybe two to four euro per 3000. that's less than your coffee at the field.
weight: the most important choice
this is where beginners get it wrong most often. bluntly: heavier is almost always better, until your system can't lift it anymore.
a heavier BB:
- holds its energy better over distance
- gets pushed around less by crosswind
- is more stable in flight, so more consistent
- slows down more gently, so your effective range is bigger
and this surprises people: at the same joule a heavier BB leaves the barrel slower, but it often carries further. speed isn't the point, energy retention is the point.
why not always go heaviest: your hop-up has to be able to put enough backspin on that BB. a heavy BB your hop can't lift just drops into the ground.
matching weight to your energy
this is the table it comes down to. the recommended weight goes with the type of setup, not with a fixed speed number.

one thing that matters here: energy limits and minimum engagement distances vary by country and by site. as a principle, a lower FPS/energy usually means a shorter minimum engagement distance, and a higher one a longer distance. don't build to numbers you read on some forum, build and chrono to whatever your local field enforces, and check their rules before you play.
important about chrono: a chrono measures speed (fps), and that speed depends on the BB weight you run through it. always chrono with the weight you're going to play, and tell the marshal which weight you're using. someone who chronos on 0.20 g and then plays with 0.32 g is measuring something different from what they actually do.
0.20 g: only for chrono or for very cheap testing. too light to play, drifts all over the place.
0.25 g: the old standard weight. fine for CQB where distances are short.
0.28 to 0.30 g: the sweet spot for most AEGs at a normal outdoor energy level. if you buy one weight, buy this.
0.32 to 0.36 g: DMR territory. also works on a good AEG if your hop-up is strong enough.
0.40 g and up: bolt-action, or DMR with a really good hop-up. a stock AEG usually won't lift this properly.
just test it. shoot two weights at 30 m (100 ft) and see which one groups more consistently.
bio BBs: honest reality check
on a lot of outdoor fields bio BBs are mandatory. fair enough, you leave thousands a day behind in the woods.
but a lot of nonsense gets told about them, so let's be sober:
what "biodegradable" means. most bio BBs are made from PLA or from plastic with an additive that speeds up breakdown. breakdown needs moisture, micro-organisms and time. in a high-temperature composting plant that goes fine. in a dry pine forest it takes a lot longer than the box suggests.
they don't vanish in a month. claims about breakdown times vary enormously and are rarely based on field conditions. assume years, not months.
they are still better than regular plastic BBs, which practically never go away. so do it.
quality used to be a problem, not anymore. old bio BBs were more brittle and less round. modern bio BBs from good brands shoot just as well as regular ones. there's no performance reason left to avoid them.
shelf life is a thing though. bio BBs can absorb moisture and get brittle over time. store them dry and in a sealed bag, not open in the shed. a bag that's been sitting in a damp garage for two years can break in your gearbox.
practical tips
- buy in 3000 or more. small bags are much more expensive per BB.
- use one brand and one weight while you're tuning your hop-up. switching means re-tuning.
- never mix weights in one magazine. sounds obvious, still happens.
- don't let BBs roll around loose in your pouch. grit on a BB goes into your barrel.
- use a speedloader instead of digging through the bag with dirty gloves.
- throw away BBs that dropped on the ground. sand on a BB is exactly what wrecks your hop-up rubber.
in short
buy decent bio BBs from a known brand, in 0.28 to 0.30 g if you have a normal AEG, heavier if you run a DMR or bolt-action, and store them dry. over a season that's maybe ten euro more than the cheapest bag, and it does more for your accuracy than most hundred euro upgrades.
