Flat hop vs R-hop: what does it actually get you?

The flat hop vs R-hop argument has been running for over a decade and most of it is people defending whatever they installed. Here is the honest version, including the part nobody says out loud: for a large number of players, neither is worth doing.

The problem both are solving

A standard hop-up bucking has a small mound on the underside that presses down on the BB as it passes. The contact patch is short, often close to a line rather than a surface.

Short contact patch means the spin is imparted over a very brief moment. That has two consequences:

  1. Inconsistency. Small variations in BB diameter, surface finish, or how the BB sits create noticeable variation in spin, and therefore in trajectory.
  2. A ceiling on usable spin. To get more lift, you have to press harder, and pressing harder on a short patch adds friction and deforms the BB more than it spins it.

Flat hop and R-hop both extend the contact patch along the barrel axis, so the BB is in contact with the hop surface for longer. More consistent spin, and more spin available before you start choking the BB.

Flat hop

What it is

A flat hop is a modification to a standard bucking. The mound on the inside is removed or flattened, and the nub above it is replaced with a longer, flatter piece that presses down over a wider area.

You can buy purpose-made flat hop buckings and nubs, or you can modify a standard bucking yourself with a hobby knife and a suitable nub. The commercial versions are more consistent than DIY, and they are cheap.

Installation difficulty

Low to moderate. If you buy a matched flat hop bucking and nub, this is a fifteen minute job that requires no cutting of your barrel and no permanent modification to anything.

If you do it yourself by flattening a bucking, the risk is cutting unevenly, which gives you a BB that curves. Buy the parts. They cost a few euros.

What you get
  • Noticeably more consistent groupings than a stock bucking
  • Ability to lift heavier BBs at the same energy
  • A more forgiving hop-up adjustment range, less of a knife edge between under and over-hop
  • Completely reversible
What you do not get
  • A dramatic increase in maximum range. Expect improvement, not transformation
  • Immunity from bad BBs or a dirty barrel

R-hop

What it is

An R-hop is a patch of rubber (usually a section of a specific hardness rubber tube) that is fitted into a window cut in the inner barrel. The barrel window is enlarged and the patch is fitted so it sits flush with the inner barrel surface, forming a continuous, precisely radiused contact surface.

The bucking then sits over the patch and the nub presses through onto it.

Related variants exist. ER-hop, I-hop, and the various "hop patch" products all use the same principle with different geometry and installation methods.

Installation difficulty

High. This is the whole story.

To install an R-hop properly you need to:

  • Enlarge and reshape the barrel hop window, usually with a Dremel and a small burr
  • Deburr the window so there is no sharp edge, because a sharp edge shreds BBs and your patch
  • Cut the patch to the exact right size
  • Sand or lap the patch so its inner surface matches the barrel's internal radius precisely. This is the step where most installations go wrong
  • Test fit, remove, adjust, repeat, often many times

A patch that sits slightly proud of the barrel surface causes drag, inconsistency, and jams. A patch that sits slightly low does nothing. A patch that is not radiused correctly grips one side of the BB more than the other and you get a curve.

And it is permanent. You have cut your barrel. If you get it wrong, you buy a new barrel.

What you get, when done correctly
  • The longest and most uniform contact patch of any common system
  • Excellent consistency, genuinely better than flat hop at the top end
  • The ability to lift very heavy BBs, which matters for high energy DMR and bolt-action builds
  • Very good performance retention over many rounds, because the patch surface is supported by the barrel
What you get, when done incorrectly
  • Worse performance than the stock bucking you replaced
  • A ruined barrel
  • An afternoon you are not getting back

My honest verdict

Flat hop suits most players. It captures the majority of the available benefit, costs almost nothing, takes minutes, and cannot go badly wrong. If you have a stock bucking and you want better range and consistency, this is the change to make. It is close to a free win.

R-hop is for a narrower group. Specifically:

  • High energy builds where you are pushing 0.40 g and heavier BBs and flat hop is running out of grip
  • Players who genuinely want the last five percent of consistency and are willing to work for it
  • People who enjoy the tinkering as much as the result, and who accept that they may buy two barrels

If you are paying someone else to install an R-hop for you, that changes the calculation. A competent installer removes the main risk, and the cost is often reasonable. This is a legitimate route and I would not talk anyone out of it.

When neither is worth it

This is the section that gets left out of most articles, so here it is plainly.

Do not install either of these if:

Your BBs are cheap. A precisely radiused hop patch cannot fix BBs that vary in diameter and roundness. Spend the money on good BBs first. You will see more improvement from that alone than from any hop modification.

Your barrel is dirty or scratched. Clean it. Check it. Then decide.

Your hop-up unit does not hold its setting. A unit that shifts under recoil or vibration makes every downstream improvement pointless. Fix the unit first.

You have not properly tuned your existing hop-up. Most players have never tested at 30 metres with the BBs they actually play with. Do that first. A well tuned stock hop-up beats a badly tuned R-hop comfortably.

Your air seal is bad. Inconsistent air volume gives inconsistent muzzle energy, and inconsistent energy gives inconsistent trajectory regardless of hop. Check your piston head O-ring, cylinder head, and nozzle before you touch the hop.

You play mostly CQB. Engagement distances are short. The consistency gain at 15 metres is not something you will notice while you are getting shot at from behind a door.

You are chasing range because you think range wins games. It does not, mostly. Positioning, communication and movement win games. I have watched players with immaculate hop-up setups lose repeatedly to a team with stock guns and a radio.

Order of operations, if you want maximum range

If range is genuinely your goal, do these in order. Each step is cheaper and more effective than the one after it.

  1. Good quality BBs, correct weight for your energy level
  2. Clean barrel, undamaged bucking
  3. Properly tuned hop-up, tested at 30 metres or more
  4. Good air seal: piston head, cylinder head, nozzle O-rings
  5. A better nub (H-nub or omega style), a few euros
  6. Flat hop bucking and nub
  7. Cylinder to barrel volume matching
  8. R-hop, or a professionally installed alternative

Most people jump to step 8 having skipped 1 through 5, then post about how their R-hop made things worse. It probably did, but not for the reason they think.

A note on power limits

Hop-up tuning is energy dependent, so know your numbers. In the Netherlands the legal ceiling under the Wet wapens en munitie is 3.5 J, but field play is governed by the stricter NABV limits: 1.20 J for full-auto with a 5 m minimum engagement distance, 1.70 J for semi-auto DMR at 15 m, and 2.30 J for bolt-action at 25 m. Limits differ substantially across Europe, so check your own site rules and chrono with the BB weight you actually play.
