AEG, GBB or HPA: which system fits you?

everyone who starts gets this question thrown at them within two weeks: AEG, GBB or HPA. the difference between AEG, GBB and HPA is not as complicated as it sounds, but the choice depends on things nobody tells you about: your climate, how much you like to tinker, and how much you want to spend on gas every game day.

short version: start with an AEG. the long version below explains why, and when that advice doesn't hold.

AEG: electric, the standard

an AEG (Automatic Electric Gun) uses a motor that pulls a piston back through three gears and releases it. that piston pushes air down your barrel and that launches the BB. it all sits inside a metal box, the gearbox.

pros:

  • works at any temperature. rain, frost, heat, doesn't matter.
  • cheap to run. a battery and BBs, that's it.
  • huge amount of parts and upgrades available.
  • consistent. shot 1 and shot 300 are the same.
  • high mag capacity is normal.

cons:

  • no recoil, so less "feel".
  • if the gearbox breaks, repairing it is a job. there are plenty of techs around though.
  • sounds mechanical, not like a real firearm.

for who: pretty much everyone who starts, and the majority of players who've been at it for years.

GBB: gas blowback, the feel

a GBB uses gas (green gas or CO2) from the magazine. on every shot part of the gas goes to the BB and part of it goes to cycling the slide or the bolt back. hence the blowback: real recoil, and on a GBBR (rifle) a bolt that comes back.

pros:

  • the best "feel" of all the systems. recoil, sound, a mag change with weight to it.
  • realistic manual of arms, which is nice if you also shoot at a range or just like realism.
  • pistols are almost always GBB.

cons:

  • cold sensitive. this is the crucial point in a cold, wet climate. green gas loses pressure as it gets colder, and around 5 degrees celsius (40 f) you'll notice your BBs stop reaching. gas also cools down while you shoot, so a mag you've emptied is cold and has less pressure.
  • expensive to run. gas and magazines add up fast. GBBR magazines run 40 to 70 euro (roughly 45 to 80 usd) each and you want more than three.
  • more maintenance. o-rings, silicone oil, leaking magazines.
  • lower mag capacity.

for who: players who put realism above everything and are willing to pay and to tinker. as a secondary pistol, GBB is normal for everyone.

HPA: compressed air, the precision option

HPA (High Pressure Air) works with an external air tank on a line, a regulator that drops the pressure, and an electronically controlled valve (poppet) in your replica. often an HPA engine is dropped into an existing AEG gearbox shell.

pros:

  • extremely consistent velocity. for DMR use that's a real advantage.
  • almost no mechanical wear. no gears stripping.
  • trigger response is instant and adjustable (burst, ROF, precocking).
  • adjusting power is a knob on the regulator, handy if you play different fields.

cons:

  • a line running to a tank on your back. that's exactly as awkward as it sounds, especially in the woods and through wire.
  • the tank needs filling. not every field has a fill station, and not every dive shop wants to fill your tank.
  • expensive to get into: tank, regulator, engine, line.
  • some fields and games ban HPA or add extra requirements. ask ahead.

for who: experienced players who know what they want. often DMR and CQB players. for a beginner it's the wrong place to start.

decision tree, short

you're new and just want to play. AEG. no question.

you play mostly in winter, in a cold climate. AEG. gas will frustrate you.

you value recoil and realism over shot count. GBB. be aware of the gas cost and buy enough magazines right away.

you want a pistol as secondary. GBB. that's just the norm.

you play DMR or CQB, you already have experience, and consistency is your bottleneck. consider HPA.

you have a small budget. AEG, secondhand. count on 150 to 300 euro (roughly 165 to 330 usd) for something decent.

you enjoy tinkering. AEG gives you the deepest rabbit hole. shimming, AOE, motor height, mosfets. you can keep busy for years.

cost over a season

roughly, assuming ten game days a year and normal usage:

  • AEG: batteries (one off), BBs. the biggest cost after buying it is just your entry fee.
  • GBB: on top of BBs, about one to two bottles of green gas per game day, plus maintenance bits. over a season that adds up.
  • HPA: fills are cheap or free, but the startup cost for tank and regulator is high.

so this is mostly a trade off between paying up front (HPA) and topping up every time (GBB).

what NOT to do

starting with a sniper. i've written a separate piece about that. short version: no.

buying a cheap GBBR because it's cool. a GBBR that doesn't leak and still works at 5 degrees is not a cheap replica.

buying HPA because you saw a wonder machine on YouTube. those guys play fields with fill stations and play every week.

thinking one system is "better". they do different things. the best player on our field has run the same standard AEG with a good hop-up for five years.

and what about the energy limits

whatever system you pick, the same limits apply. and this is the part i can't give you a single number for: power limits vary by country and by site or field. there's usually a legal ceiling set by national law, and then the fields or associations you play at run their own stricter limits on top of that, which are the ones you'll actually be measured against.

the principle that matters is this: lower FPS means a shorter minimum engagement distance. fields set an energy cap per firing mode (full-auto, semi-auto/DMR, bolt-action), and each cap comes with a minimum distance you're allowed to shoot someone at. a bolt-action that shoots harder gets a bigger minimum distance because it hurts more up close. build your replica for the limit you're actually going to play, not the legal maximum, and always chrono to your local site's rules before you play.
